What is Ju Jitsu

Ju Jitsu (also known as Jiu Jitsu or Ju Jutsu) is a classical Japanese martial art and was the Samurai warriors primary system of unarmed combat. Its origins can be traced back to Ancient Japan and was formalized around the 16th Century leading to many schools developing and teaching their own style of Ju Jitsu. It was practiced alongside traditional Samurai weapons schooling and honed on the battlefields and in the towns of Feudal Japan.

Modern day Ju Jitsu is based on many of these long established principals and provides an excellent system of self defence. Many Ju Jitsu techniques can be found in Police and Military training all over the world. Ju Jitsu is also the basis for other arts such as Judo and Aikido

The Techniques

Ju Jitsu incorporates strikes, kicks, throws, holding techniques, joint locks, chokes/strangles, the use of pressure points and more. Techniques are practiced between two or more trainees on a matted area. Attackers are overcome emphasizing technique and skill as opposed to just brute strength. As such the system is suitable for all types of people regardless of size or gender.

It is a progressive and in-depth art and such as it may not be mastered 'overnight'. It is however an effective, comprehensive and, for many, rewarding art to study. Ju Jitsu as taught at this club has no sporting applications. The club operates a graded belt syllabus from red belt (Kyu) to Black Belt (Dan) grades.
